Rejoice in the silence of your Inner World

The world is fast and noisy. The news and feeds want our minds overwhelmed and our hearts well, disheartened. COVID, floods, political drama, federal elections, financial recessions, military interventions. It feels so chaotic and hopeless, isn’t it?

Our senses are the way we are used to connect with the world around us, no wonder why it’s so easy to feel that the state of the outer world creates the state of our inner world. Why we are constantly looking for external order and certainty so that we can “finally” feel it inside ourselves.

My dear mentor Peter Sage, told us in one of our mastermind sessions… “EVERYTHING is happening in the world ALL the time and there is not much you can do about it”. “What you CAN do, is to be the expert of your inner world, to be the artist that creates WITHIN YOU what you want to see, how you want to feel and the outer world will follow”

When we are not aware of the power we have to influence the experience of our own lives, we are at the expense of the world, we live by chance instead of by choice, we feel powerless.

We blame the world for our suffering and we buy into the illusion that our peace will come when this or that happens. That we will feel good when… but the WHEN never comes. It’s a constant race and, unfortunately, one that we will never win. It’s the most common human illusion and the reason why so many feel stressed and trapped.

A Yogic Model to truly know ourselves...

When someone asks the question Who are you? We immediately think about our name, our body, our nationality, our profession, our family situation. In the emptiness of our modern culture we are constantly looking for the right labels and titles that will show the world our worth. We have forgotten who we really are.

Who am I? Is indeed not an easy question to answer and most people avoid trying because it’s uncharted territory. We have gotten to believe that we are the body that moves us around, or the thoughts in our head, or the cocktail of emotions that we experience, all triggered by the noise.

For centuries, yogis have used a beautiful model to easily peel who we really are called the 5 Koshas.

Kosha is a Sanskrit word that means layer, sheath or body. The kosha model suggests that we experience the world through the delicate intersection of these five different layers or bodies…

We are so much more than what we see, like an onion with different layers, finding our essence in its purest form when we take off the external layers. Another way to visualise the koshas is a set of Russian dolls nested within each other.

The 5 Koshas or Layers

Your Physical Body
(Annamaya Kosha)

The first layer of who we are is our physical body, it's this incredible suit we use to experience the world and the only layer we can see. Your body is unique and incredibly intelligent, with millions of years of evolution. Your body wants you to feel and be your best! You just need to look after it with nourishing food, water, sunshine, exercise, yoga and stretching.

Great questions to ask your physical body to come back to balance are.. What do you need from me right now? How can I nurture you?

Your Energy Body
(Pranamaya Kosha)

Our second layer is the energetic body. This is our vitality, where our energy comes from. Some people call it Chi, others call it Prana.

Sleeping well, taking moments for rest and relaxation, and limiting external stimulants (like caffeine and sugar) are great ways to keep this vital force in its purest state.

The easiest way to access your energetic body is through your breath, you can easily shift your energy by practicing breathing techniques (pranayama).

You can actually feel your energetic body through sensations in the body and there are many healing practices like Reiki, Pranic Healing, Acupuncture that they are meant to rebalance your energy body.

Your Emotional Body
(Manomaya Kosha)

Our third layer is our emotional body. Here we are going a little deeper to the layer that makes us beautifully human, where we learn and feel.

We experience it through our emotions so, constant check-ins with how we feel, taking time for introspection, self-enquiry and journaling are great ways to nurture this layer and create emotional awareness.

In our go-go world of trying to get a million things done each day, make sure you take time every day to let your nervous system pause, feel and simply be.

Your Intellectual Body (Vijnanamaya Kosha)

Our fourth layer is the thinking body which we access mainly through our magnificent brain.

Our thoughts create our reality so it is important to nourish our minds with positive, constructive thoughts about ourselves, others and the world around us.

Questions are the steering wheel for the mind, so asking great questions and questioning our thoughts (like The Work from Byron Katie) are wonderful ways to have a calm & clear mind.

Your Bliss Body
(Anandamaya Kosha)

The fifth layer of who we are is our Spiritual or Bliss body, also known as our true self. It’s where we experience the highest qualities of love, joy and peace.

Our bliss body can’t be shaken from peace and tranquility. You feel one within yourself and with everything around you.

A great way to access it is by being in nature, being in service and doing things that bring you joy. What makes you feel like time stops? Do a little bit of that everyday! You were born to be happy and share your gifts with the world.

Why are the 5 Koshas relevant in our health and wellbeing?

These five layers are independent but wisely connected with each other, so I have two news for you…
The bad news is that if one of them is out of balance it affects all the others.
The good news is that if you want to bring them all back to harmony, you just need to focus on balancing one, the rest will follow.

Let’s explore this in our day to day…

You are feeling unwell today, you have a sore throat, runny nose and feel cold headed. You do a RAT test at home and it comes out positive for COVID.

The fact: Your physical body has a virus

The story: I have COVID!!!! Just the thought of having the “C” word creates a reaction in your mind (triggered by external noise) “OMG what if I am one of the many people that get really sick?

The story stresses the cells in your body and, as a result, you start to feel even more unwell than you did before the test. You start to feel all the symptoms and not any symptoms, all the bad ones! (If you think I am exaggerating, Google nocebo effect meaning…)

The stressful thought makes your breath shallow and tenses your muscles. The tension makes your muscles sore, the shallow breath obviously makes you feel that you can’t breathe and the fear creeps up. Then the emotion creates a response in your brain that tells all of your body that it is in danger which automatically releases cortisol and adrenaline. Your blood pressure and heart rate increase. You start breathing even faster. The worst migraine makes its appearance, your muscles ache and your immune system is in shock, not only because of the virus but also because of the stress one thought created.

Can you see the cascading effect in your 5 layers?

Try this instead… You tested positive and you lovingly remind yourself that yes, you have a virus (one of the thousands of viruses you are exposed to at any given moment). You breathe deeply and remind yourself that your body has millions of years of intelligence and wisdom, you tune in the amazing capacity it has to heal, you reassure yourself that your body is always working on your behalf. You take another breath, rest, drink water, eat gentle, nourishing foods and give your body the time it needs to feel better.

How does the experience feel different?

Try this other experience to feel your 5 koshas clearly…

Stand with your feet hip distance apart.
Relax the back of your knees.
Engage your lower tummy muscles.
Open your abdomen. Raise your chest.
Roll the shoulders up, back and down.
Stretch the back of your neck and let the top of your head reach for the sky, making you taller and longer.

You just changed your posture (physical layer), now…
Notice the effect in your breath
Notice the effect in your emotions
Notice the effect in your thoughts
Allow love, joy and peace to be present.

It’s truly magical…

Outer World follows Inner World

In the Whole-Hearted Girls program, I love dedicating a couple of sessions to explore our Inner World and the 5 Koshas. I invite the girls to open themselves to the gift of Starting and Finishing their day in their Inner World through this practice:

Feel your body connected with the Earth
Notice your breath becoming one with the Wind
Feel your emotions flowing like the waves of the sea
Notice your thoughts like the clouds in the sky
Feel the bliss of coming home

I invite you to receive this gift yourself, create a daily inner practice that nurtures all the layers of who you are. I promise it will change everything for the better. Not only in your own life but for the world around you.

It's time for you, for me, for all to Arise and take ownership to creating the most precious piece of art with our lives and with the world we want to hand over to our younger generations...

You don't have to travel anywhere.
Journey within yourself to enter a treasure
and bathe in the splendor of your own light
.
